Lost Your Car Keys With No Spare? What to Do

October 20, 2026 0 Comments

If you lost your only car key, you can still get back on the road without towing the car to a dealer. The first hour matters most. Search smart, keep the car safe, gather proof that it is yours, and then make one clear call for help. This checklist walks you through each step in order.

Step 1: Search the Places Keys Usually Hide

Take 10 minutes and retrace your steps before you call anyone. Lost keys often turn up close by. Check these spots first:

  • Every coat and pants pocket, plus purses, bags and backpacks.
  • The last store, restaurant or office you visited. Call the front desk and ask.
  • The ground around the car, near the tires and under the bumpers.
  • The kitchen counter, the mailbox and the door you came in through.

Found them? Good. Now get a spare made this week, while you still have a key to copy.

Step 2: Is the Key Lost, or Locked Inside?

Walk around the car and look through every window. If the key is sitting on the seat, in the cup holder or in the ignition, you have a lockout, not a lost key. That is usually a much quicker fix. Here is what to do if your keys are locked inside the car.

Step 3: Make Sure the Car Is Safe Where It Sits

Think about where the car is parked. A store lot at closing time or a narrow road shoulder are not good places to leave it overnight. If the car is on private property, tell the manager what happened so it does not get towed while you sort things out. If the doors are open, take out your wallet, phone charger and anything else of value. Feel uneasy? Head somewhere bright and busy and wait there.

Step 4: Gather Proof That the Car Is Yours

A trustworthy locksmith checks ownership before making any car key. That rule protects you. Without it, anyone could claim your car and drive off with it. Have these 3 items ready:

  • Your driver’s license or another photo ID.
  • The car’s registration or title.
  • The VIN. Look for a 17-character code stamped on a small plate at the base of the windshield, driver’s side.

Is the registration locked inside the car? Say so when you call. Ask what other proof will work for your situation.

Step 5: Write Down the Make, Model and Year

These 3 details decide what kind of key your car uses. Older cars often use a plain metal key. Many newer ones use a key with a chip inside, a remote fob, or a fob that lets you start the car with a button. Each type takes a different process to replace, and some take more time than others. Whether a locksmith can make a new key for your car depends on those details, so have them in front of you when you call.

Step 6: Think About Where the Lost Key Might Be

A lost key is still out there. Maybe it was in a stolen bag. Maybe it was on a ring with a tag that shows your address. In either case, a stranger could use it to find and open your car. Tell the locksmith if you think that could happen.

There are ways to shut the old key out. A car rekey changes the inside of the lock so the old key no longer turns it. On many cars with chip keys or fobs, the lost key can also be removed from the car’s memory when the new key is set up.

Step 7: Call a Mobile Locksmith, Not a Tow Truck

You do not have to haul the car to a dealer and wait for days. A mobile locksmith brings the tools to the car, at home, at work or in a parking lot across town. When you call, share three things: where the car is, what you have ready from the steps above, and whether the old key could be in someone else’s hands.

If your new key comes with a remote, it will need to be paired to the car before it works. To see what that involves, read our guide on how key fob programming works.

Step 8: Get a Spare Made Before You Leave

Once you hold a working key again, ask for a second one on the same visit. Making a copy from a key that already works is a far easier job than building one from nothing. Keep the spare at home or with a family member you trust. Never hide it in or under the car, because thieves know those spots too.

Add one more habit while you are at it. Snap a photo of your registration card and save the VIN in your phone. If this ever happens again, step 4 will take seconds.
