New Orders for Seymour Johnson? Rekey Before the Boxes Arrive
Seymour Johnson Air Force Base is in Goldsboro. It is named for Seymour Johnson, a Navy test pilot from Goldsboro, and it is home to the 4th Fighter Wing and its F-15E Strike Eagles. Military OneSource says a PCS assignment, short for permanent change of station, generally lasts two to four years. So homes near the base change owners and tenants on a steady cycle.
Each move leaves keys behind. The family before you may have given copies to a sitter, a neighbor or a moving crew. You have no way to count them.
That is why we suggest a rekey on move-in day. We take the lock apart, reset the pin stack to match a new key and put it back on the same door. Old copies stop working the moment we finish. Your hardware stays in place, and you get fresh keys for each person in the house. Outside doors that share a key type can usually be set to one key.
A few tips for a PCS move:
- Call as soon as the keys are yours. A rekey before the moving truck arrives means your things go into a house only your family can open.
- Count every door. Include the garage entry door and any shed, and tell us the total when you call.
- Think about a keypad. With a smart lock, nobody has to carry a key at all. You set a code for each person and remove it when they no longer need in.
Keeping the house as a rental when you leave on new orders? Rekey before the first tenant moves in. Learn more on our home rekey and lock repair page.
Most Goldsboro Homes Are Rented: A Key Plan for Landlords
Goldsboro is a renter’s town. Census estimates for 2020 to 2024 put the city’s owner-occupied rate at 36.3%. That means close to two of every three homes here are rented. For a landlord, every turnover raises the same question: who still has a key?
A simple plan keeps that question small:
- Rekey between every tenant. The renter who left, their friends and anyone they gave a spare all lose access. The new tenant starts clean.
- Keep a key log. Write down how many keys each unit has and who holds them. Update it at every move-in and move-out.
- Fix outside door locks right away. North Carolina law, G.S. 42-42, lists a lack of working locks on outside doors as an imminently dangerous condition. A landlord must remedy it within a reasonable time after learning of it.
Renting rather than owning? Get your landlord’s okay first, because your lease may say who can alter the locks. Once you have it, we can do the work and cut copies for everyone on the lease.
Car Keys for Goldsboro Drivers on US 70, I-42 and US 117
US 70 is the main road through Goldsboro. The bypass around the city now carries the I-42 name. US 13 and US 117 cross town too, and I-795 links Goldsboro to I-95 up in Wilson. With that much driving, keys get lost, dropped and locked in trunks.
Lost the last key? We can cut a replacement and pair a new fob or keyless remote while the car sits where you left it. That covers a long list of makes, though not every one. Programming is the step that links a new fob to your vehicle so it will accept that fob.
When you call, have these ready:
- Year, make and model. Those three facts tell us right away whether we can make a key for it.
- Whether a working key still exists. Copying a key is simpler than building one from scratch.
- The exact spot. A business name on US 70 or a cross street is better than “near the base.”
If a key was stolen along with your wallet or bag, say so. A rekey of the door locks can shut that key out. Read more about our car key and lockout service.
Easy Places to Meet Us in Goldsboro
Locked out away from home? A clear meeting spot helps your locksmith find you. Three well-known places in town:
Wayne Community College
The college’s 156-acre main campus is on Wayne Memorial Drive. Tell us the building or parking lot nearest your car.
Herman Park
Herman Park has a recreation center, tennis courts, picnic shelters and a miniature train. Name the part of the park where you left the car.
Downtown on Center Street
Center Street is the historic heart of downtown. Its right of way is 140 feet wide, a leftover from the railroad tracks that once ran down the middle. Name the nearest cross street or the store you parked in front of.
Engine still running? Tell us. A child or pet trapped in a hot car is a 911 call first, then ours.
Locks for Goldsboro Shops, Offices and Job Sites
Goldsboro is the Wayne County seat, so many offices and stores are based here. Keys pass between staff, cleaners and contractors, and they do not always come back. A commercial locksmith can help:
- Get you inside after a lockout at opening or closing time, at any hour.
- Rekey the doors after a worker leaves with a key.
- Duplicate keys for each person on the new key list.
- Repair worn locks, or put in a stronger lock when a repair will not last.
Give us a door count up front so the right parts come along. Property managers can line up several rentals in one call. More details are on our business locksmith page.
