Whether you’re locked out of your home or need to change the locks after a move, a locksmith can be a lifesaver. But should you hire a professional, or try to do it yourself? Let’s take a look at the pros and cons of both so you can make the best decision for your needs.

Doing It Yourself

Pros:

  • Since you aren’t paying for labor, you will save some money.
  • It can be satisfying to do the work yourself and knowing that you did a great job.
  • You may already have all the tools you need for the job.

Cons:

  • If you’ve never done it before, changing locks can be tricky and time-consuming.
  • You could damage your door if you’re not careful.
  • DIY jobs sometimes take longer than expected, which could leave you stranded outside for longer than necessary.

Hiring a Locksmith

Pros:

  • A professional can get the job done efficiently and typically much quicker.
  • You won’t have to worry about damaging your door or getting locked out.
  • Locksmiths have the knowledge and experience to do the job right the first time.

Cons:

  • You’ll have to pay for labor, which can be expensive depending on the complexity of the job.
  • You may have to wait for an appointment if you call during busy times.

As you can see, there are pros and cons to both hiring a locksmith and doing it yourself. If you’re experienced with home improvement projects and confident in your ability to do it correctly, then DIY may be the way to go. However, if you’re unsure or don’t have the time, then hiring a professional is probably your best bet. Whichever way you decide to go, just make sure that you do your research ahead of time so that you know what to expect.
